Some time ago I built a new guitar pickup winder, because the old one was difficult to manage. It had a power drill as motor and I had trouble making it run slowly enough. The new winder has a 12V gear motor that runs both clockwise and counter-clockwise max. 600 RPM. The 5-digit winding counter counts up to 10000 max. 720 RPM. The 6 mm axle is supported by 2 ball bearings, the speed control and on/off switch are combined and I use drillbit depth retainers on the leader bar to limit the width of the winding. The whole thing has cost me about 20€ plus my own work. The winder has served me with grace and dignity from day one. It has inspired me to wind quite a few new pickups and repair dead ones the last two weeks, and it's been a breeze.The few coil wire breakages,have been due to my own clumsiness. The last pickups were wound 3 days ago, assembled and wax potted the following day. I also photographed them in my makeshift living room studio yesterday. These are NYDE Tradbuckers, traditional standard size humbucking twin-coil pickups with AlNiCo5 bar magnets for 6-string guitars. They have brass base plates, cream and black coil bobbins. The neck pickup has 5300 windings of AWG42 wire per coil and 8.5 k resistance, the bridge pickup has 5800 windings of AWG42 wire per coil and 9.2 k resistance. Like all my humbuckers they can be split to single coils with a switch. These pups are zebra, but I also wind them in black, white and cream - and with chrome or gold covers. The alternative magnets are AlNiCo2 and AlNiCo4. I've made pickups long enough to have close hunch of how they sound, but they're individuals and the sound also depends on the type of guitar they're installed in.
